THE VALUE OF MRI İN SPINAL PATHOLOGIES : BASIC PRINCIPLES AND RECENT ADVANCES

The multiplanar capability of MRI has markedly benefited the sludy of the spine. Trweighted images yield morphological images of the cord and roots contrasting against the low-intensity CSF (4) (Fig. 1). Tz-weighted images provide different types of information; the "myelographic effect", in vvhich CSF appears very bright, delin-eates nen/ous structures (spinal cord and roots), as well as ligaments, vvhich remain dark or gray. İn this article, the basic principles of MRI and recent advances in the evaluation of spinal pathologies have been presented and current literatüre has also been revievved.
